Eric Silva - California

"My jewelry is about self-examination; revealing pieces of myself through artistic creations. It is a reminder of the things we take for granted, such as the beauty and innocence found in nature. I work with the natural contours of organic ivory, semi- precious stones, and rustic metals. My process involves carving, sawing, forming, and soldering. The carving is usually the focal point of my work. I begin with a vision and the piece gradually evolves through a flow of ideas and intuitive choices. Each piece possesses a complex three-dimensional form, with movable parts constructed of rivets and hinges. The carvings are stained with a blend of herbs, teas and coffees to create depth. Then utilizing other materials such as sterling silver and occasional copper accents the piece begins to develop. This is followed by an accompaniment of semi precious stones that I have hand cut and polished under water. I then secure the carvings and stones by drilling directly through the carvings and the silver to thread rivets that securely fasten the hand carved pieces. The semi-precious stones are then set in non-traditional settings. Closures and clasps are then constructed using unconventional methods, adding to the originality of each piece. This process of progressive art creates sculpture as well as adornment; it can be worn or displayed. There are many components to the construction of my jewelry, but they tend to be simple reminders of life’s gifts."

Loretta Lam – Carmel, New York

"I call my current work ‘primitive modern’. It explores the most basic and universal shapes – circles, ovals, triangles. There is an inherent balance and harmony to these forms. They are natural forms for jewelry, wearable and tactile and used the world over in adornment. I believe they evoke a connection to our collective past.

The modern part comes from my choice of media. Polymer clay has only recently arrived in the artist’s toolbox, but for me it is a perfect choice. The color is spectacular. You can work with any palette your heart desires. It is soft and easily modeled in its raw state and hard and durable after baking. The surface can be textured and rough or polished to a brilliant shine. It is complex and surprising and great fun to work with. I just love it and I hope you enjoy it too."

Regina Imbsweiler – Atlanta, Georgia

"My jewelry pieces are improvisations on themes of free flowing as well as classical forms. The contrast between sterling silver, often oxidized, and 22k gold inspires the play with textures and patterns. Fine wires act similar to lines in drawings, and the use of gold balls can be bold or very delicate, depending on their sizes. Other favorite metals are 18k gold and platinum. I love luminous cabochons, aquamarines for their silky shine and their largeness, tourmalines for the range of colors. My goal is to keep an almost ancient simplicity for each piece, with the overall collection having a contemporary feel, reflecting complex references between materials, colors, and textures."

WatchCraft – Long Island City, New York

"In 1996, while walking along the rails of the Long Island Railroad, I happened to glance up and catch the sun's reflection on two large pane windows in an old industrial building. Through the glare I noticed that the space was empty. Curious, I walked to the front of the building and noticed that the New York subway also ran in front of this building. Staring at the facade, and hearing the screeches of the N train passing by over my head, I caught my breath, and made my way to the superintendent’s office to inquire about the space. I was preparing myself for the sure let down when the superintendent opened the doors and I looked out of the large windows down at the tracks of the Long Island Railroad. My intrigue led me to discover that two floors in this old industrial building were vacant and remarkably available for rent. Instantly, I decided to make this my studio in New York City.

Today, at the foot of the Queensboro Bridge, overlooking the skyline of midtown Manhattan I design my limited edition wristwatches. Inspired by the treasures I still find walking along the railroad tracks of my backyard, my work includes large wall clocks and a series of "Pendulariums"- large oxidized boxes that hold as many as 20 pendulums and second hands-."

Bo JC – Los Angeles, California

It's as if gypsy collided head on with elegance and when the dust cleared, there was a collection of necklaces sparkling with sapphires, earrings dripping with Mexican fire opals and bracelets jingling to the tune of tourmaline. Such charm is the Bo J.C. jewelry line. Created in 1995 by sisters Cathy Charles, the treasure maker who designs each collection, Jeanet Lee, the storyteller at the business end of it all, and their busy bee mother Helen “Bo” Lee, designer of the one-of-a-kind couture collection.

The fabulous trio works with a small troop of artisans who are masters of intricate craftsmanship- hammering, twisting and wire-wrapping. Bo J.C. is ever expanding on what they do best- delicate, feminine pieces full of spirit and made with love. Whether done in fine gold chains or their trademark braiding technique, Bo J.C. necklaces look daring layered or stand divine on their own. Earrings are made with the tiniest and finest points in mind, while bracelets are dainty yet bold in their generous use of gems.

Sharmen Liao – San Gabriel, California

"I ran a successful computer design studio for 15 years, and now I have returned to my first love: knitting.  I have been an avid knitter since my teenage years.  The thrill of shaping textures and forms out of a single continuous line fascinates me.  I have always surrounded myself with fibers, yarns, and textiles, collected in Italy and elsewhere.  I love to combine unexpected materials, or experiment with unconventional methods and elements.  My goal is to transform the functional object from the ordinary to the special, from the traditional into the new and exciting.

My love of combining unusual materials led me to create my knitted and crocheted wire jewelry.  I use traditional textile techniques to form unconventional structures for my jewelry and handbags.  I knit the wire with gemstones and pearls to form soft and feminine structures.  On other pieces, I trap rhinestones inside knitted mesh, then further weave the strands together to form an interlaced whole."

Bezak Glass – Ohio

"Jewelry as an artistic expression is how I describe my work. I have strived to learn and master whatever technique serves my design purposes. This has led to studies in granulation, platinum fabrication, glass bead making, glassblowing, and fine cast glass/crystal.

My foundation consists in Dental Laboratory Technology; these skills readily transferred to jewelry methods. A graduate and past instructor for five years of the Gemological Institute of America, my skills evolved and grew. I have owned and operated several shops in California, and now I reside in N. Ridgeville, Ohio. Still stretching outside conventional jewelry in an artistic manner, but overall concerning myself with form, beauty and function."

Alchemy – Brooklyn, New York

Missouri-born designer Pam Meyer, founder and president of Alchemy, is a trained metal smith.  She established Alchemy as a better costume jewelry company in the early 1980s, selling to department stores in the USA and overseas.  In 1994, disillusioned with the fashion jewelry industry’s orientation to trends, Pam Meyer introduced trans-seasonal, industrial-motif jewelry groups and gift items representing a radical departure from everything that she had done before.  The approach that now defines her work reflects her primary influences- the Bauhaus, determination to look beyond fashionability and to work with the matrix of the past, the motion of the present, and the meaning of the future.

River Song – Seattle, Washington

"The architecture of the natural world inspires my collection.  My study of horticulture and plant taxonomy, and the vivid journals and illustrations of 19th century botanists influence my designs.  I hand select each gem for luminosity and unique character. Many pieces echo the forms of flowers I observe. Others are inspired by the colors and textures I see in nature.  My jewelry is a journey into the natural world."

Billie Shane – Los Angeles, California

Billie Shane evolved seamlessly from furniture designer to jewelry, taking her skills designing bronze tables down a few sizes into something more portable. Blending the aesthetic influences of mid-century design with the somewhat rustic bronze casting techniques (from the aptly titled Bronze Age) she arrives at the perfect balance between the two.
