Obsidian Wind Chimes – Portland, Oregon

Richard's career as an obsidian wind chime maker began in 1971 when he came across a dish pan full of strange rocks in a little Mom-and-Pop rock shop in Redding, California. An itinerant hippie jeweler at the time, he was initially fascinated by their ornamental possibilities; but, as he began to paw through them, he could not fail to notice their tonal qualities. In time, the lure of wind chimes overcame the desire to make more jewelry in an over-crowded market.

Fairy Crosses

Legend has it that these Staurolite Stones were formed by the tears of fairies which upon hearing the news of the Crucifixion fell to the ground and were crystallized into little pebbles on each of which was formed a beautiful cross.  It is well known that President Theodore Roosevelt and President Wilson, Thomas A. Edison, Charles Lindbergh, as well as the crowned Heads of Europe carried these lucky pieces tucked snuggly away about them.

Viewing Stones

Spirit stones have been a source of beauty and serenity in a chaotic world for thousands of years.  In China, these naturally formed sculptures are known as Gongshi of which scholars, emperors and other people of refined taste held them in high regard because of their meditative properties and wondrous natural beauty.  It has been said that a garden could not be beautiful without such rare rocks, and that a studio lacked elegance without Gongshi.

These stones are admired for surfaces that suggest great age, forceful profiles that evoke visions of the majestic nature, overlapping layers or planes that impart depth, and perforations that create rhythmic, harmonious patterns.  Spirit stones represent a focus for mediation and higher consciousness in a world focused on instant gratification!

These Gongshi Spirit stones were unearthed in various quarries in the Taihu (Lake Tai) region in China.

Shiva Lingams

“Tantric Shiva Lingams,” sacred to the Hindu tradition, are ceremoniously gathered once a year from muddy banks of the Narmda River, one of 7 sacred places of pilgrimage in India.  Of those found, very few have the characteristic patterning that makes the tantric Lingams so unique.

They are naturally formed of a mineral called cryptocrystalline quartz, with iron oxide deposits said to have been implanted in the riverbed by a meteorite millions of years ago.

Hindus worship Lingams in Shiva temples as a representation of the Lord.

In the Tantric tradition, the shape embodies masculine energy: dynamic expression and knowledge.

The markings called Yoni depict feminine energy: wisdom and intuition.  Together the female energy arouses the masculine energy, shaping the stones, and making them unique objects from meditation.  They are said to contain the loftiest vibration of all stones on earth.
